Sony Is Leaving North American Aftermarket Car Audio: What Buyers and Owners Should Know

Paul Galanos |

Sony is winding down its North American aftermarket car-audio business, according to an industry report describing a Sony dealer email dated September 30, 2026. For drivers who own—or are considering—a Sony receiver, speaker, amplifier or subwoofer, the dates matter more than the headline.

The reported plan says Sony will continue selling these products through December 31, 2026. Sony’s field, sales and technical support for industry partners is expected to continue through March 31, 2027. Beginning in January 2027, consumers are to contact Sony directly for support.

That is a staged wind-down. It does not mean every Sony car-audio product disappeared from sale on September 30, or that an installed product suddenly stops working.

If you already own Sony car audio

Keep your receipt, model number and warranty documents. If you need help with a product, those details make it easier to identify the correct support path. The reported dealer notice does not spell out every future warranty or repair procedure, so owners should follow Sony’s current instructions for their particular product rather than assume that support has ended.

If you are shopping for a Sony product

Check the exact model’s availability and warranty terms before purchasing. As the sales period winds down, selection may change from one model to another. If you are planning a larger system, also consider whether the receiver, speakers, amplifier and installation parts you want can all be obtained together.

A different brand may be a better choice for a project that needs room to grow over time. That decision depends on the features you value—such as screen size, phone integration, sound controls, amplifier connections and vehicle compatibility—not simply the brand name on the faceplate.

Sony has played a major role in car audio, from in-dash CD players to the Xplod era and the newer Mobile ES line. Its reported exit marks a change in the North American aftermarket, but current owners should focus on their product documentation and confirmed support information as Sony provides further details.

The takeaway: Sales are reported to continue through the end of 2026, while the support transition extends into 2027. We will update this article if Sony publishes more detailed consumer guidance.
