Thiele/Small Parameters Explained: How to Read Subwoofer Specifications

Thiele/Small parameters are not a scoreboard. They are a connected set of measurements used to model how a low-frequency driver behaves—especially near resonance and inside an enclosure.

The Big Picture

The four core ideas to keep in view throughout this guide.
Qts = (Qes × Qms) ÷ (Qes + Qms)
Vd = Sd × Xmax
Efficiency relates Fs³ × Vas ÷ Qes
Re = DC voice-coil resistance
12 Volt Outlet rule: Never design from one headline number. Confirm the operating condition, units, load, limits and measurement method before applying any formula to real equipment.

Fs, Re and the Starting Point

Fs is the driver’s free-air resonance, where moving mass and suspension compliance interact. Re is DC resistance measured at the voice coil and is normally lower than nominal impedance.

A lower Fs does not automatically mean deeper or better bass. Enclosure alignment, motor strength, moving mass, excursion and available power work together.

The Q Family

Qms describes mechanical damping, Qes electrical damping and Qts their combined total. Lower Q indicates greater damping; higher Q indicates a more pronounced resonant tendency.

Rules that assign sealed or ported solely from Qts are rough screening tools. Model the complete driver in the intended enclosure and power range.

Vas, Cms, Mms and BL

Vas translates suspension compliance into an equivalent air volume. Cms is mechanical compliance, Mms moving mass and BL reflects motor force factor. These parameters influence efficiency, resonance and transient behavior together.

A large Vas is not enclosure volume. It is an equivalent compliance value used in equations and modeling.

Xmax, Sd and Displacement

Xmax is a stated linear one-way excursion limit; Sd is effective piston area. Their product estimates displacement volume. More displacement supports more low-frequency output before excursion limits, all else equal.

Compare Xmax definitions carefully. Geometric, Klippel-derived and manufacturer-specific methods may not be directly equivalent.

Combined Q

For Qes 0.50 and Qms 5.0: Qts = (0.50 × 5.0) ÷ (0.50 + 5.0) = 0.455.

Displacement comparison

A driver with 500 cm² Sd and 2.0 cm one-way Xmax has Vd = 1,000 cm³, or one liter of one-way linear displacement by that simplified calculation.

Common Mistakes That Cost Performance—or Equipment

  1. Choosing by one specification
  2. Treating Vas as recommended box volume
  3. Comparing unlike Xmax methods
  4. Assuming low Fs guarantees deep in-car response
  5. Ignoring thermal and mechanical power limits
Safety first: Disconnect battery negative before changing wiring, fuse positive conductors close to stored-energy sources, follow vehicle and equipment instructions, and use a qualified installer when the work exceeds your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Qts mean?

It is the driver’s total Q at resonance, combining electrical and mechanical damping.

Is lower Fs always better?

No. It is one input among many and must be considered with the enclosure and other parameters.

What is Vas?

An equivalent air volume representing suspension compliance—not a direct box-size recommendation.

Why is Re lower than rated ohms?

Re is DC resistance; nominal impedance describes an AC operating classification.

What does BL measure?

Motor force factor: magnetic flux density multiplied by conductor length in the field.

What is Xmax?

A manufacturer-defined linear excursion rating, usually one-way. Verify the definition when comparing drivers.

Can T/S parameters predict SPL perfectly?

They support useful low-frequency models, but real output also depends on nonlinear behavior, power compression, cabin, enclosure losses and installation.
