12 Volt Outlet is proud to announce our partnership with Steve Meade Designs. SMD brings a builder's perspective to car audio: the amplifier, the connections, the electrical system, and the setup all deserve attention. For enthusiasts who enjoy planning how a system works as much as how it looks, that makes this partnership especially exciting.
The SMD amplifier selection at 12 Volt Outlet gives customers a way to explore that identity in a finished product. Developed through the Steve Meade Designs and DS18 collaboration, these amplifiers combine distinct visual details with configurations for speaker and subwoofer systems. The important first decision is choosing the configuration that belongs in your build.
Four-channel choices for the main speakers
Start with the SMD-200.4AB four-channel amplifier or compare our SMD-300.4AB listing when planning amplification for separate speaker groups. The four-channel Class AB layout provides a useful starting point for discussing front and rear speakers, or other arrangements supported by the exact amplifier documentation.
Four channels should be assigned deliberately. A component speaker set with a passive crossover has different channel requirements from an active front stage in which individual drivers receive their own amplified signals. Draw the speaker and crossover arrangement before deciding how many channels you need.
Compare rated output at the final speaker load, rather than treating the model number as the entire specification. If bridging is part of the plan, follow the exact manual's connection and load requirements. A configuration suitable for one set of drivers may be unsuitable after a later speaker change.
A dedicated route for the bass section
The SMD-2000.1D monoblock amplifier addresses a different task. DS18 identifies it as a Class D subwoofer amplifier, with low-frequency controls for shaping its role in a bass system. It belongs in a plan built around the selected subwoofers, their final wired impedance, and the enclosure.
Begin with those subwoofer details before selecting the amplifier. Driver quantity and voice-coil version affect the available wiring arrangements. Enclosure design influences how the drivers behave, while the intended listening level and program material influence the demands placed on the system.
When bass and main-speaker amplification are chosen together, the transition between them can be planned from the beginning. Appropriate crossover settings, polarity checks, and level matching help the bass support the music instead of overpowering the rest of the arrangement.
A visible design deserves a thoughtful installation
DS18's SMD product information highlights an acrylic window, digital lighting, and a VM-1 voltage display. Those features create possibilities for an amplifier rack that is meant to be seen. They also provide a reason to think carefully about orientation, access, and the surrounding fabrication.
Preserve the airflow and clearances specified in the manual. Leave room for cable bends and access to the controls, and keep terminals protected from cargo or accidental contact. A display panel should make the system easier to appreciate without making inspection and service unnecessarily difficult.
The voltage display gives information about voltage at its measurement point. It does not establish amplifier output power or replace electrical testing. Use it as part of understanding the system, alongside appropriate measurements and a clear picture of the charging and power-distribution arrangement.
Make setup part of the build
Gain adjustment should follow a clean signal and a defined measurement process. Treating the gain knob as an extra volume control can create problems even when the amplifier and speakers are otherwise well matched. Establish the usable source level, configure the relevant filters, and check the result across the intended listening range.
Electrical support deserves the same care. Ask a qualified installer to assess charging capability, reserve capacity, cable sizing, grounding, and circuit protection for the complete installation. Larger output goals make that assessment more important, and safe listening practices remain essential during testing and demonstrations.
