Ballistic acoustic padding and tri-layer material serve different roles in a vehicle sound-treatment project. The names can sound similar, but their construction matters when you decide where and how to use them.
SSQLT Acoustic Padding
Ballistic SSQLT is adhesive-backed hybrid foam padding. Metra specifies that it can be applied over Ballistic damping material or used on its own. Each package supplies one piece with 15 square feet of nominal material coverage.
Before ordering, compare the listed dimensions and thickness with the space behind your trim. Measure the intended treatment area and plan the cutting layout. A vehicle name alone does not establish how much padding will fit.
SSTRL Tri-Layer Damping
Ballistic SSTRL combines butyl, aluminum and foam in one material. Its package contains six 18-by-16-inch sheets, totaling 12 square feet of material.
SSTRL is not the same construction as a separate foam pad. Choose it based on the product's application instructions and the surfaces you plan to treat, rather than treating foam padding and damping sheets as interchangeable.
Plan Around the Installation
Leave clearance for trim, fasteners and moving components. Review preparation and application instructions before applying adhesive-backed material. Keep the product's intended use in mind; these vehicle products should not be assumed suitable for unrelated home or studio acoustic projects.
Compare both Ballistic materials, then check installation rollers and seam tape for the other parts of your damping project.
