A good sound-treatment plan starts with the surfaces you want to treat. Ballistic, a Metra Electronics product line, offers several material types and package sizes for vehicle installations. Comparing the construction and coverage helps you choose a useful starting point.
Ballistic Series and Hollow Point
Ballistic Series combines a butyl rubber composite with an aluminum facing. Hollow Point also uses butyl-and-aluminum construction. Both offer packages for speaker areas, doors, trunks and larger projects, with different sheet sizes and material specifications.
These sheets are intended to damp panel vibration. A kit name such as door or trunk identifies an application area; it does not guarantee a complete fit or a fixed result in a particular vehicle.
Where Tri-Layer Material Fits
SSTRL tri-layer material combines butyl, aluminum and foam. It is a separate product from SSQLT acoustic padding. Review the actual product construction and thickness rather than assuming every Ballistic material uses the same layers.
Use Coverage as a Planning Tool
Measure the area you intend to treat, then compare the package's sheet dimensions and total material area. Cutting shapes from rectangular sheets creates offcuts, so the amount you need depends on the layout as well as the measured area.
Check clearance behind trim and around moving parts before choosing a material. Follow the manufacturer's installation guidance for the specific product. Damping material does not replace repairs for loose hardware or damaged panels.
